BV is the name of a condition in women where the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. It is an infection that usually involves a vaginal discharge. Since vaginal discharge may be caused by a cervical infection like chlamydia or gonorrhoea, it is necessary to be seen by a sexual health clinician to diagnose the cause of the discharge.
How do you get it?
BV a not sexually transmitted infection. The cause of BV is not fully understood. BV is associated with an imbalance in the bacteria that are normally found in a woman's vagina. Factors that might increase the risk for developing BV include:
Having sex with multiple partners
Using irritant or perfumed soaps or shower gels
Having another STI
Having a IUCD (intra uterine coil device)
Symptoms
50% of people with BV don't have any symptoms. However if you do have symptoms, they could include:
a thin and grey discharge (fishy smelling)
sometimes a burning or itching sensation
If you have any of these symptoms or think you need a test, please contact Confidential Doctor to arrange an appointment.
